Eagles lock in another star wide receiver with record contract extension

Less than two weeks after signing one star wide receiver (Devonta Smith) to a massive contract extension, the Philadelphia Eagles followed that up on Thursday night with an even larger contract extension for their other star pass-catcher.

The Eagles announced they have signed A.J. Brown to a three-year contract extension that reportedly carries the highest average salary ever for a wide receiver.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the contract is worth a total of $96 million, averaging $32 million per season.

That is the highest per-year average ever for a receiver.

Brown joined the Eagles exactly two years ago in a draft-night trade with the Tennessee Titans. Since arriving in Philadelphia he has been one of the NFL's best wide receivers and helped turn the Eagles into a consistent Super Bowl contender.

Brown is coming off a 2023 season that saw him catch a career-best 106 passes for 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns.

His extension in Philadelphia means that Brown and Smith will continue to be one of the best wide receiver duos in the league.

Between Smith and Brown the Eagles have now committed $171 million to the wide receiver position over the next three years.

Brown's deal comes just a couple of days after the Detroit Lions signed Amon-Ra St. Brown to a huge contract extension and likely precedes even larger contract extensions for Brandon Aiyuk in San Francisco and Justin Jefferson in Minnesota.
